Rosenfield, John M.

American Art Historian and Author1924–2013

John Max Rosenfield was an American art historian, with a specialization in Japanese art.

John Max Rosenfield graduated from University of California, Berkeley, Southern Methodist University, University of Iowa, and Harvard University.

He joined the Harvard Faculty in 1965 and was promoted to professor in 1968. In 1975, he became the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Professor of East Asian Art. He served as chair of the Department of Fine Arts at Harvard and Acting Director of the Harvard University Art Museums before retiring in 1991.

In March, 2001, he was awarded the 19th Yamagata Banto prize for his contributions in spreading Japanese culture outside Japan.

His publications include Portraits of Chogen: The Transformation of Buddhist Art in Early Medieval Japan and extensive entries in Unrivalled Splendor: The Kimiko and John Powers Collection of Japanese Art.
